Trending better, but still a long way to go

The Metropolitan Crime Commission has released crime numbers for the past week…

As of April 9, 2023: 

Homicide Victims: 71

Three homicide victims in the past week vs. 7 in the same week of 2022.

This is a 12% decrease over 2022, when we’d had 81 homicides as of the same date.

Nonfatal Shooting Incidents: 129

There have been approximately 180 victims of nonfatal gunshot injuries in 2023, though this number is subject to change as investigations progress.

At the same time in 2022, there had been 130 shooting incidents and approximately 177 nonfatal shooting victims. 

Note: Included among last week’s shooting victims were two children and two women shot in an incident on I-10.  One child remains in critical condition. 

Carjacking Incidents: 53

 Carjacking incidents have decreased by 52% compared with the same time in 2022 – this is the largest decrease we have seen in any major violent crime compared with 2022.

It is worth noting that the considerable decrease in carjacking incidents coincides with a large increase (+151%) in auto theft compared with 2022. 

Armed Robbery: 128

Reported armed robbery is down 10% relative to 2022. 

Seven incidents in the past week, nine in the same week last year.

(Armed robbery continues to show stability, across weeks (1-14) and years (2019-2023).

In 2022, there were 925 reported auto thefts as of April 9th.

There have been at least 2,323 reported auto thefts to date in 2023, an increase of 151% since 2022. 

 -This is an average of 24 stolen cars per day
