Weekly Crime Report Ending 21st February
Metropolitan Crime Commission doing great work to keep us informed
We wish there were better news. Despite the joyful Mardi Gras weekend, violence did not abate. Indeed, a mass shooting on the parade route left a teenage girl dead and a 4 year old baby injured.
Another mass shooting as well, this one in the East and by the I-10… an all-to-common occurrence, as a group of 4 people in a van unleashed bullets into a car with two people inside…. others were caught in the fire.
Homicide victims: 41
-Six homicides over Mardi Gras weekend (Friday-Tuesday)
-The 2023 total includes at least 2 negligent and 1 vehicular homicide (hit-and-run fatality), which will not be counted as “murders”
Nonfatal shooting incidents: 67
–approximately 110 shooting victims
-Several recent homicides included multiple nonfatal shooting victims (not counted among “shooting incidents”)
Carjacking incidents: 35
-10 since MCC issued last bulletin
-A substantial reduction compared with 2022, when New Orleans had already had 72 reported carjacking incidents
Armed Robbery: 79
-Sixteen incidents since the last report 10 days ago
-Lots of tourists in town, this number could have been a lot worse!
We extend our gratitude to the Metropolitan Crime Commission for their good work!
