Twenty-One Children Have Been Killed By Gunfire In New Orleans This Year
The Weekly Crime Report ending 6 August 2023
As noted last week, women and children increasingly are the victims of murder in New Orleans.
And a child was shot this past Sunday in New Orleans East, a toddler…
And while it’s gratifying to see improvement in the crime rate compared to 2022, looking back to 2019, before the disastrous covid response, there’s much work to be done: homicide has increased by 97%, shootings by 68%, and carjackings by 59%.
Sociopaths with guns walk our streets, and Jason Williams, the Orleans Parish District Attorney, isn’t showing much concern to remove them from our streets.
As of August 6, 2023
Homicide Victims: 152
Five homicides in the past week, including a 13-year-old boy.
Homicide total includes six victims of vehicular homicide, one negligent, and approximately three pending justifiable consult. These will not be counted as “murders” by NOPD.
Homicide in 2023 is 15% lower than the same time in 2022.
Nonfatal Shooting Incidents: 247
There have been approximately 332 victims of nonfatal gunshot incidents in 2023, though this number is subject to change as investigations progress.
At the same time in 2022, there had been 285 shooting incidents and approximately 403 nonfatal shooting victims (overall reduction of 17% in fatal/nonfatal shooting incidents and victims).
Carjacking Incidents: 100
Carjacking incidents are down 46% relative to 2022 – still the biggest decline we are seeing in any major violent crime category since 2022.
Continues to coincide with a substantial (129%) increase in auto theft (as of August 6, 2022, 2,018 auto thefts vs. 4,622 in 2023).
Armed Robbery Incidents: 248
Armed robbery is 29% lower than this time in 2022 and 5% lower than the same time in 2019, though we remain slightly to moderately above 2020-2021 rates (+19% and +3%, respectively).
In 2022, there were 2,018 reported auto thefts as of August 6th.
There have been at least 4,622 reported auto thefts to date in 2023, an increase of 129% since 2022.
This is an average of 21 stolen cars per day, though we have improved since earlier this year, when the city was averaging 25 stolen cars per day.
