The Pelican Institute Releases Crime Report
The PI seems derelict in their depiction and assessment of crime in Louisiana.
This belies belief:
Neither criminal justice reform nor decreased incarceration rates exacerbate crime, we’re assured.
In this report, the Pelican Institute literally ignores the past two years’ worth of crime increases:
They cite no statistics since 2020, relying on only FBI crime data.
And what comfort should we derive from this:
As we type this, The BEC asks itself: “Am I missing something? Or are they really putting out a crime report from three years ago?”
Through 2020, Louisiana’s crime spike exceeded five of seven Southern states, yet the PI presents this as not so bad because… it was worse elsewhere.
Surely, we’re misreading this, we continue to beg of ourselves… this can’t be right, right?
Prison populations through 2019:
We won’t go on, but we could…
Even in the notes, there’s nothing beyond 2020:
Sadly, the realities of crime are quite stark right now.
Crime Since 2019:
Homicide +128%
Shootings +88%
Carjackings +169%
Armed Robberies: +26%
