The Mandina's Killer - A Felon Out On Probation - Charged With Killing a 15 Year Old Boy In Texas; The Weekly Crime Report
Statistics from the Metropolitan Crime Commission
Memorial Day weekend having been a bloody mess in cities across the country, we learn today that police have charged the suspected Mandina’s shooter with committing another murder in Texas…
From The Advocate:
A convicted felon who allegedly murdered a Mandina's waiter and wounded a patron was on a killing spree that has culminated in his arrest for another murder in Texas, according to the Houston Police Department.
Kyron Keith Fazande, 22, allegedly shot a 15-year-old boy dead in Houston on May 6 — roughly a week after he allegedly killed Hilbert Walker III, 23, and wounded a 54-year-old Chicago woman at the Mid-City restaurant in the 3800 block of Canal Street on April 28.
A convicted felon, Fazande was out on probation at the time of the alleged murders after accepting a plea deal in St. Bernard Parish in connection with a January 2021 shooting.
Not yet in today’s statistics are recent events: a 17 year old shot on the I-10 near Esplanade Avenue, a woman killed in Algiers, and the arrest of a woman in Little Woods who beat a 20 year old man to death.
It is not yet summer.
If you have not seen our post “Children With Guns,” please take a moment to give it a read. (Link below.) It likely will reveal much of the problem, though we admit to lacking a sufficient response. This image provides a clue, however:
We do know this: the problem is not the lazily and often-repeated “So many GUNS!” The problem is the empty soul of the person using the gun (or offering the gun to a toddler as a toy.) And about that, feeling at a terrible loss for how to meaningfully help, we place our trust in the Holy Spirit.
From the Metropolitan Crime Commission:
As of May 29, 2023:
Homicide Victims: 110
A reduction of 10% compared with 2022, but still 116% higher than in 2019.
Nonfatal Shooting Incidents: 176
There have been approximately 255 victims of nonfatal gunshot injuries in 2023, though this number is subject to change as investigations progress.
Note: At the same time in 2022, there had been 192 shooting incidents and approximately 277 nonfatal shooting victims.
Carjacking Incidents: 77
Carjacking incidents are down 41% relative to 2022 – this is the biggest drop we have seen in any violent crime category since 2022.
Should be noted that the considerable decrease in carjacking coincides with a large (+136%) increase in auto theft.
.
Armed Robbery: 191
Reported armed robbery is down 11% relative to 2022.
*Armed robbery continues to show a great deal of stability, across both weeks (Weeks 1-21) and years (2019-2023), though we can see a larger increase (+34%) compared to 2020, during the COVID-19 shutdown.
In 2022, there were 1,450 reported auto thefts as of May 29th.
There have been at least 3,423 reported auto thefts to date in 2023, an increase of 136% since 2022.
This is an average of 23 stolen cars per day.
While we note an improvement over 2022 incidents, the city continues to suffer compared to 2019 levels.
It may be a long summer, indeed.
And we will never forget Lawrence Herr…
Not sure how relevant this is, but McGoey was an assistant DA before getting elected judge in 2020.
