Orleans Parish State Representative Mandie Landry, Lawyer, Tone Deaf, Going After Victims of Car Break-Ins
At risk of unintended consequences we'd all wish to avoid
A glimpse into the mind of a Notre Dame / Georgetown Law grad… and Democrat:
We NEED to place liability on people who leave guns in cars! We know people break into cars because they’re looking for guns - and they find them. Then the stolen guns are used to commit violent crimes. This isn’t hard, we know what’s happening.
Got that?
In a state without constitutional carry rights… where the concealed carry permit costs at least $300 and requires many hours of classroom time and waiting/sending/traveling to Baton Rouge/waiting some more….
In a city with a carjacking and murder rate off the charts…
In a neighborhood where you’re as likely to be shot as not…
And State Representative Mandie Landry, Democrat, wants to penalize YOU when your car is busted into.
You’d prefer to not have to carry at all, except this town is a crime-ridden swamp! And it’s policies of the DEMOCRATS that has made it this way!!! And when a thug breaks into your car, YOU should be penalized?
Questions For Representative Landry:
What defines “secured guns” to you? In cars. Inside a locked glovebox? Under a seat and out of view? In a specially-made-for-cars lock box? Car doors locked? What if it’s a quick hit during a short time away from the car, like getting gas and going inside to pay… ?
How would this avoid disincentivizing reporting, adding to the guns lost? The driver wishes to avoid penalty while the criminal knows the break-ins will more often go unreported. The thief’s chance of consequences improves in his favor with your proposal.
There are scenario after scenario; which will be scrutinized and how be they judged? At what penalty? What is the threshold of offense?
Does this also lead to requiring registration of guns? How else might you know whom to charge? (Not for the criminal use later, but the initial loss? How will you know what gun has been stolen?)
People already live here in fear; it’s why they’re traveling with guns!
We share your wish, fully share it, that every gun is securely held everywhere. Yes, absolutely, we share this with you. But this must be expected of everyone: criminals who use guns first in line. They are to blame, not the car owner.
Incentivize reporting, don’t squash it. Be on the side of the victim. Have high expectations of everyone equally.
You very well might be creating unintended consequences contrary to the outcome you wish.
