On the Persistent Maddening Endurance of the "Broken Window" Fallacy
"... there's certainly been damage and destruction that's going to fuel the economy here in the coming months."
Major hurricanes, like broken windows, spur positive economic activity.
So continues the myth of the broken window, as media outlets are already “crediting,” if you will, the destruction from Hurricane Ian with “fueling the economy” of the Florida Gulf Coast.
Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) Orlando vice-president Justin Greider has already been featured on national business news, saying: “there's going to be a lot of money spent recovering and rebuilding from this hurricane, particularly as it worked through the entire state and had different impacts in different markets. Not everywhere looks just like Fort Myers, but there's certainly been damage and destruction that's going to fuel the economy here in the coming months.”
Well, Justin, how lucky for the people of Florida and, indeed, how fortunate we all were who endured Hurricane Katrina, our very own economic fuel!!
During the ongoing national recession, why not just bust ALL the windows and blow up ALL the buildings to fuel and quicken the economic recovery?
Many of you have endured destructive hurricane forces. Please tell us below… do you feel luckier for having lived through it? Or would your life have been just fine without having lost the carport, the roof, and the flooded car?
