Perhaps only salt intrusion in our water supply will displace crime from the top of everyone’s list of concerns about living in New Orleans.
The data continue to tell a repeated story: compared to the recent highs, 2023 is showing an improvement. But compared to norms before the extremes, crime remains high, and it’s of a nature that’s particularly frightening, seeming random to many while targeted to new and specific victims.
The Metropolitan Crime Commission continues in their mission to inform the public about the city’s crime trends:
As of September 24, 2023:
Homicide Victims: 176
Five homicides in the last week (including two vehicular homicides) brings our YTD total to 176.
Homicide total includes nine victims of vehicular homicide, four negligent, and approximately four which may ultimately be deemed justified by the DA’s office. These will not be counted as “murders” by NOPD.
Homicide in 2023 is 18% lower than the same time in 2022.
Nonfatal Shooting Incidents: 290
There have been approximately 389 victims of nonfatal gunshot incidents in 2023, though this number is subject to change as investigations progress.
At the same time in 2022, there had been 352 shooting incidents and approximately 480 nonfatal shooting victims (an overall reduction of 21% in fatal/nonfatal shooting incidents and a 19% reduction in fatal/nonfatal shooting victims).
Carjacking Incidents: 116
Carjacking incidents are down 48% relative to 2022 – still the biggest decline we are seeing in any major violent crime category since 2022.
Continues to coincide with a substantial (105%) increase in auto theft (as of September 24, 2022, 2,645 auto thefts vs. 5,412 in 2023).
Armed Robbery Incidents: 287
Armed robbery is 30% lower than this time in 2022 and 10% lower than the same time in 2019, though we remain slightly to moderately above 2020-2021 rates (+12% and +3%, respectively).
In 2022, there were 2,642 reported auto thefts as of September 24th.
There have been at least 5,412 reported auto thefts to date in 2023, an increase of 105% since 2022.
This is an average of 20 stolen cars per day, though we have slowly improved since earlier in the year, when the city was averaging 25 stolen cars per day.
We remain grateful to the fine people at the MCC.
