Metropolitan Crime Commission Addresses Mass Shooting Incidents Along With the Weekly Crime Statistics Update

Five mothers killed in five weeks, too

As of May 21, 2023: 

Homicide Victims: 105

Four homicide victims in the past week, including 2 killed in a mass shooting Saturday night, compared with 7 the same week last year.

This represents and 11% decrease in overall homicides, though we remain 128% higher than the same time in 2019. 

Nonfatal Shooting Incidents: 166

There have been approximately 243 victims of nonfatal gunshot injuries in 2023, though this number is subject to change as investigations progress.

At the same time in 2022, there had been 178 shooting incidents and approximately 257 nonfatal shooting victims.

Carjacking Incidents: 72

Carjacking incidents are down 45% relative to 2022 –still the biggest decline we are seeing in any major violent crime category since 2022.

This considerable decrease in carjacking in carjacking coincides with a substantial (157%) increase in auto theft.

Armed Robbery: 177

Reported armed robbery is down 9% relative to 2022.

We are starting to see larger increases (now +35%) relative to 2020, though this is largely attributable to the pandemic lockdown and lack of normal tourist traffic in 2020. 

*Armed robbery continues to show a great deal of stability, across both weeks (Weeks 1-20) and years (2019-2023)

In 2022, there were 1,265 reported auto thefts as of May 21st. 

There have been at least 3,245 reported auto thefts to date in 2023, an increase of 157% since 2022. 

This is an average of 23 stolen cars per day and/or 1 stolen car per hour
