The Metropolitan Crime Commission continues its very good work in keeping us all informed of crime intensity here in Orleans Parish. Some good news to report, as nonfatal shootings, armed robberies, and carjackings seem to be easing for the moment. Homicides, however, are not following suit.
As of March 12, 2023:
Homicide victims: 53
-Four homicide victims in the past week, homicide is now 15% higher than the same time in 2022.
-The 2023 total includes at least 2 negligent and 1 vehicular (hit-and-run) homicide, which will not be counted as “murders.”
Nonfatal shooting incidents: 81
-Reported nonfatal shooting incidents are 14% lower relative to the same time in 2022.
-There have been approximately 121 victims of nonfatal gunshot injuries in 2023, though this number is subject to change as investigations progress.
Carjacking incidents: 46
-After a record-setting ZERO reported carjacking incidents the prior week, we had 6 reported carjackings last week.
–At a 43% reduction since 2022, carjacking has shown a more significant decline than any other category of major violent crime.
Armed Robbery: 96
-We have seen a notable drop in reported armed robberies since the end of Mardi Gras – we have only 9 reported armed robberies in the first 2 weeks of March, compared with 14 reported in the first 2 weeks of February.
-Overall, we are 15% lower in 2023 than 2022 YTD armed robbery.
