I Just Exited A Meeting With Councilman Freddie King Regarding the Naked Bike Ride
He was fully open and engaged
I just had the pleasure to sit with Freddie King and his assistant in a 3-person conversation about this past Saturday’s Naked Bike Ride. I voiced our objection to the fact that the City of New Orleans sanctions the illegal act of public indecency. I emphasized that we have no problem with parading generally, and that the sole issue is the nudity.
I told him that if the City permits the parade license next year, that I will sue to stop it. I told him that I have three demands regarding the parade:
The name of the event cannot include “Naked”
Everyone must be covered, even if only scantily, but legally covered
Naked riders will be arrested (not simply warned)
Mr. King recounted to me the story of he and his wife - before their children were born - chancing upon the parade and having no idea what it was all about… this was likely around 2014 or so. He is the father of 5, including an 8 year old girl. He said he’d never dare to bring his children into the Quarter on the day of the Bike Ride, and he skipped the Creole Tomato Festival for that very reason.
He admitted that he did not know why the City permits this event, but he will look into it and get back to me. I am certain he will. He is personable, of good humor, and a kind and gentle man.
He also told me that if we sue to block the parade, he would not discourage us in our efforts.
I explained to Mr. King that I understand our City’s unique tolerance for such things. But a line is crossed with nudity and the City’s explicit approval of it.
He fully understands.
So… we’ll stick with this issue as it unfolds and we’ll make changes to this event moving forward.
