Homicide Rate Increases 9% Over This Time Last Year; Zero Carjackings Last Week
Metro Crime Commission Releases Weekly Numbers, Ending 5th March
While there’s some relief in the carjacking category - down 49% from 2022 - we despair to report that the murder rate increases.
YTD as of 5th March 2023:
Homicide victims: 49
-This is a 9% increase compared to 2022 and the only category of major violent crime that is higher in 2023 than in 2022.
-63% of homicides in 2023 have occurred in either the 1st, 6th, or 7th NOPD Districts.
Nonfatal shooting incidents: 77
–Approximately 114 shooting victims
-Compared to the same time last year, nonfatal shootings are down 10%.
Carjacking incidents: 40
-This is the first time since the Crime Commission has been issuing crime trends (with the possible exception of Hurricane Ida), in which zero carjackings were reported in the prior week.
-Down 49% compared to 2022.
Armed Robbery: 91
-12% reduction compared to 2022.
We are grateful to the Metropolitan Crime Commission for its work keeping us all informed on safety.
