Crime Statistics as of 17 Sept
A 12 day run without homicides comes to an abrupt end
Despite our disappointment with Metropolitan Crime Commission’s decision to invite District Attorney Jason Williams to speak at their luncheon honoring law enforcement, we do appreciate their efforts to keep us all informed about crime trends.
Remember, it’s important to compare to 2019, before the Covid response changed the social (and criminal) fabric. Though homicide rates have improved over last year, we suffer a 98% increase since 2019.
As of September 17, 2023:
Homicide Victims: 170
Our 12-day streak without a homicide ended this week, though we are still on track to have the lowest number of monthly homicide since September 2021.
Homicide total includes seven victims of vehicular homicide, four negligent, and approximately four pending justifiable consult. These will not be counted as “murders” by NOPD.
Homicide in 2023 is 18% lower than the same time in 2022.
Nonfatal Shooting Incidents: 282
There have been approximately 381 victims of nonfatal gunshot incidents in 2023, though this number is subject to change as investigations progress.
At the same time in 2022, there had been 339 shooting incidents and approximately 469 nonfatal shooting victims (an overall reduction of 19% in fatal/nonfatal shooting incidents and victims).
Carjacking Incidents: 115
Carjacking incidents are down 47% relative to 2022 – still the biggest decline we are seeing in any major violent crime category since 2022.
Continues to coincide with a substantial (107%) increase in auto theft (as of September 17, 2022, 2,561 auto thefts vs. 5,291 in 2023).
Armed Robbery Incidents: 282
Armed robbery is 28% lower than this time in 2022 and 10% lower than the same time in 2019, though we remain slightly to moderately above 2020-2021 rates (+12% and +2%, respectively).
5,300 Auto Thefts To Date…
In 2022, there were 2,561 reported auto thefts as of September 17th.
There have been at least 5,291 reported auto thefts to date in 2023, an increase of 107% since 2022.
This is an average of 20 stolen cars per day, though we have slowly improved since earlier in the year, when the city was averaging 25 stolen cars per day.
