The Metropolitan Crime Commission reports six murders last week, including the devastating news that three young children were burned to death by the father in retaliation against the children’s mother.
Generally improving on 2022’s numbers, there’s still a long ways to go to return to pre-2019/pre-Covid response levels.
We can only hope and pray that the grandma selected as chief of police will get a handle on her department and will effectively police the city.
The BEC has publicly come out against her selection, so all we can do is wish Anne Kirkpatrick well for everyone’s sakes.
As of October 22, 2023:
Homicide Victims: 188
Including the three children killed in a domestic violence-related fire, we had 6 homicides last week, bringing our YTD total to 188.
Homicide total includes ten victims of vehicular homicide, four negligent, and approximately four pending justifiable consult. These will not be counted as “murders” by NOPD.
Homicide in 2023 is 18% lower than the same time in 2022.
Nonfatal Shooting Incidents: 313
There have been approximately 413 victims of nonfatal gunshot incidents in 2023, though this number is subject to change as investigations progress.
At the same time in 2022, there had been 376 shooting incidents and approximately 514 nonfatal shooting victims -an overall reduction of -19% on shooting incidents and -20% on shooting victims (fatal and nonfatal)
The New Orleans District Attorney was the most conspicuous victim of crime recently, as he and his mother were carjacked at gunpoint. Initially, I relished the news - a sort of populist justice response - but I felt bad for my reaction when I watched the DA’s interview about the incident. It really shook him up, and his 78-year old mother is suffering emotionally as a consequence.
Victimization is horrific, no matter who you are.
We do hope, however, that the incident drove it home to the District Attorney: law and order make for a safer city!
Carjacking Incidents: 127
Carjacking incidents are down 46% relative to 2022 – still the biggest decline we are seeing in any major violent crime category since 2022.
Continues to coincide with a substantial (91%) increase in auto theft (as of October 22, 2022, 3,093 auto thefts vs. 5,911 in 2023).
Armed Robbery Incidents: 303
Armed robbery is 32% lower than this time in 2022 and 11% lower than the same time in 2019, though we remain slightly above 2020-2021 rates (+3% and +1%, respectively).
Little change in the auto thefts numbers, to be honest. Still 20-25 cars per day get stolen in New Orleans.
In 2022, there were 3,093 reported auto thefts as of October 22nd.
There have been at least 5,911 reported auto thefts to date in 2023, an increase of 91% since 2022.
This is an average of 20 stolen cars per day, though we have slowly improved since earlier in the year, when the city was averaging 25 stolen cars per day.
The BEC encourages everyone to possess some non-lethal means of self-protection. As often as we hear about guns, the reality is that either the criminal will use the gun on you, or the law will turn that gun on you, charging you with a crime if, God Forbid, you have to use your firearm.
Pepper spray or other means are always recommended first. And of course, situational awareness goes a long way in keeping you and your family safe.
