As a “Westbanker,” I travel the Crescent City Connection frequently. And living only a block from the levee, I regularly see the huge cargo ships as they travel down river toward the Gulf of Mexico.
I have many times imagined a collision and startled myself at the thought of being plunged down into the deepest portion of the Mississippi River, trapped in my car, panicking and drowning.
So it was with horror that I watched the collision this morning that took down the Key Bridge in Baltimore.
“There but for the Grace of God go I,” I thought.
And if that disaster had occurred at 1:30 pm instead of 1:30 am… Good Lord.
Here’s a look at what happened when the MV Dali struck the bridge…

So glad to see BEC back!
