35 Juveniles Murdered in New Orleans So Far This Year - 2 More This Past Week
When will city leaders enact real solutions?
Writing Monday evening, 27 November, and local news is dominated by two related shooting events that happened today in the 7th Ward.
This homicide and these shootings will be part of next week’s crime report from the Metropolitan Crime Commission, but it’s evidence of the fact that a war is raging on our city’s streets.
This writer has advanced the cause of Stop & Frisk policing, getting a bit of pushback. But I will reiterate my demand for the tactic to be employed here.
Far from being racist, Stop & Frisk, when correctly implemented, can create positive results and ‘people of color’ are the primary beneficiaries:
35 Murdered Juveniles This Year
Young people continue to suffer the violence, as there is a 1 in 14 chance a black boy in New Orleans won’t grow to see his 35th birthday.
This week’s crime report reveals that sad fact.
As of November 26, 2023:
Homicide Victims: 211
Six homicides (three of whom were juvenile) last week brings our YTD total to 211.
Homicide in 2023 is 16% lower than the same time in 2022, though remains higher relative to 2019-2021.
The homicide total includes eleven victims of vehicular homicide, five negligent, and approximately six which may ultimately be deemed as justified by the DA’s office. These will not be counted as “murders” by NOPD.
Nonfatal Shooting Incidents: 338
There have been approximately 451 victims of nonfatal gunshot incidents in 2023, though this number is subject to change as investigations progress.
At the same time in 2022, there had been 429 shooting incidents and approximately 570 nonfatal shooting victims (an overall reduction of 21% in fatal/nonfatal shooting victims and a reduction of 22% in fatal nonfatal shooting incidents).
Carjacking Incidents: 135
Four carjacking incidents last week, though we remain -47% lower than in 2022 – still the biggest decline we are seeing in any major violent crime category since 2022.
As we have seen during most of 2023, the carjacking reduction coincides with a large (80%) increase in auto theft (as of November 26, 2022, 3,643 auto thefts vs. 6,562 in 2023).
Armed Robbery Incidents: 331
Armed robbery is 34% lower than this time in 2022 and 15% lower than the same time in 2019.
This is the only category of major violent crime showing reductions compared with the past 4 years.
In 2022, there were 3,643 reported auto thefts as of November 26th.
There have been at least 6,562 reported auto thefts to date in 2023, an increase of 80% since 2022.
This is an average of 20 stolen cars per day, though we have slowly improved since earlier in the year, when the city was averaging 25 stolen cars per day.
Please take care, friends.
